Another opinion poll shows Daniel Ortega, of the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN), tantalisingly close to the 35% mark which would be sufficient to win in the first round of presidential elections on 5 November provided that he retains a five-point lead over his closest rival. Ortega's continued presence out front persuaded the US ambassador, Paul Trivelli, to make a characteristic foray into domestic politics last week. Some of Nicaragua's media took to portraying Trivelli as the sixth presidential candidate.
